Flower of life in Ephesus

“I took this photo in 1994 in Turkey (before I even knew about the Flower of Life). This floor mosaic must be about 8m square and lies on the floor of house 1a in Ephesus, Curetes Street, near the Library of Celsius. It is probably 1st Century BC (Roman). At the time I visited, these houses were out of bounds to tourists (as an archaeologist they let me in), so it may not have been seen before.” – Submitted by Frances Eley.

The Stadium

The stadium, which is located immediately to the south of the gymnasium, was built by the Emperor Nero (54-68 A.D.). The whole measures 228 x 38 m. , with the tiers of seats resting against the slope of Mt Panayir and the northern section of the cavea supported by vaults. The finds include a number of column capitals and roughly carved marble slabs. The building was later used as a quarry for building materials for use in the construction of the Byzantine castle, with the result that very little now remains.

The stadium was used for chariot races, athletic displays and gladiatorial combats and marble reliefs depicting gladiators are displayed along the Marble Way. In the hilly terrain opposite the stadium a number of buildings of uncertain date have been unearthed.

These include a fish market, a Byzantine fountain and a funeral chamber thought to be that of Androcles, the legendary founder of the city. The Marble Way (Via tecta) connecting the Artemision to the centre of the city, passed by here. The stadium is now used for the camel wrestling competitions which have gradually become a traditional feature. Every year, in spring, visitors come from all over the country for the festivities taking place during the annual fair.

HERACLITUS….

Heraclitus
(c.540-470 BC)
Heraclitus of Ephesus was one of the most fascinating of the early philosophers. He introduced into philosophy a new self-consciousness about method and language and a self-critical interest in the faculties used to attain knowledge. He developed a theory of the human soul; he praised its creative resources and spoke of the importance of self-exploration. “The death of souls is to become water, the death of water to become earth; but from the earth water wins life, and from water the soul also wins life.”

When he said that the universe is ruled by logos, he was probably speaking of the ordering of the shifting, changing world that is imposed by human beings in their discourse and thought. He always urged that close attention be given to the polarities and concealed structures embodied in language.

His famous claim that an individual can and cannot step into the same river twice reveals an interest in the criteria of unity and identity: even though all material constituents have undergone a change, it is still, in a sense, the same river. Preoccupied with change, he declared that fire is the central element of the universe and he postulated a world with no beginning and no end. Heraclitus’s influence can be seen in Stoicism and, most recently, in the style and thought of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.

Ephesus cottages…

Fig house was a wonderful part of our honeymoon in turkey. The natural stone of the house hand- …. timbers, along with old implements, were perfectly restful. The modern conviniences blended in , were a blessing after many pensions. We were a bit travel worn when we arrived in şirince, and appreciated the detail and the comfort. We were also grateful to Aysel for her hospitality and gentle good care. We will be back on our anniversary..!
